Backstage Las Vegas With Oribe

A month or so ago I went to Las Vegas to train with hairstyling and product genius Oribe. It was a great time and we learned a lot of new tricks. More importantly, it was a thought-provoking experience, and we came back with fresh creative inspiration for Salon Belle de Soir.

Oribe says that his concept is Grotesque Glamour. He himself is inspired by things he finds around him in the culture of this new decade—from Lady Gaga to the movie Avatar. Over the weekend, he taught us to let our imaginations run wild and to just go for it as we experimented with new products and styling techniques.

Me? I get inspired by the iconic images of Marilyn Monroe, Coco Chanel, Elvis Costello, and Ted Kennedy. So I had a lot of fun keeping those types of images in my mind as I experimented. Hairstyling is an art, and I was pleasantly surprised to realize, during one creative handwriting exercise we tried, that my name spelled backwards has the word “ART” in it.

While we were there we had the chance to play around with models and wigs, and we took them from big fun fancy wig hair to comb-downs and freehand haircuts. I’m including the pictures here for your amusement.

Oribe said,  “always make sure your client looks beautiful.” That really resonated for me because it’s always been my own philosophy and was my motivation for creating Salon Belle de Soir. I look at people’s hair as art, and at the same time I use concept of comfort-meets-elegance when I work with every client.

The last thing Oribe said that stuck with me was: “I don’t know what the f**k I’m doing, but I’m going to do it until I love it.” I took his words to heart and think they apply not just to styling hair, but to everything we do in life!
